DIRECTORS’ STATEMENTS

Much of my female experience has been associated with anxiety and isolation. I have felt it is imposed on me and requires me to face feelings of fear and danger, some of which I can’t share with anybody, even those closest to me. For me, the accumulation of these feelings leads toward pregnancy, which I feel as an imposed burden on the body as much as a potential gift. In a moment when my gender alienated me from my body, I met Jacob and saw in his story that it is possible to build bridges that connect people and dispel the loneliness of gendered experiences. In my art, I approach the theme of body and embodiment through exploration and introspection. I am used to asking questions to myself and finding reasons in myself to take action. What I find intriguing about Jacob is that his approach to his body is not directed inward but is reflective of his partner’s needs and a shared vision of parenthood and family.
This vision can help people make more sense of their own gender, their partnerships and parental journeys. That is where I see the importance of telling this story. Together with Jacob, I want to show that our bodies are not our prisons, and even if they seem to be, we can learn from others how to break their walls and turn their metal bars into beautiful plants.
Jacob Wolf Lefton - Director/Participant
I chose to make this film of my own experiences inducing lactation and nursing my child because when I became interested in the subject, it was very difficult for me to find guidance. I found no depictions of someone like me breastfeeding and examples or discussions of anyone inducing lactation without first having years of estrogen in their bodies. When I tell people that I breastfed my child, they don’t believe it because they’ve never considered that it’s possible for men. Inducing lactation is usually done by adoptive mothers of newborns or to support cis women who are struggling to produce milk, or held within the queer community among lesbian and transfemme parents. In our culture, a disproportionate amount of care work, especially the physical burdens of pregnancy and infancy, is on women and their bodies. My partner and I were seeking ways to equalize the physical burden of bringing a child into the world.I turned the camera onto myself because I hoped that if this process worked, I could create new images of parenthood. Changing our culture requires changing our imagination. In this film I use my masculine body to breastfeed my child. It’s real and beautiful. I want to share this image of reality so other men and their partners can be inspired to seek it for themselves if they wish.

A Film By Desdemona Chiang
Starring Irene Tu, Lisa Lu, and Maria Zhang
LOGLINE
An aspiring stand-up comedian delays her career aspirations to do the greater work of caring for her 99-year-old grandmother in her final years.
DIRECTORS’ STATEMENTS
Caregiving for an elderly person is a full-time job—it’s frustrating, thankless, and poorly compensated. But it is also the most human and irreplaceable of jobs. Future technology and AI may track our health metrics and make hospital visits more efficient, but it can never provide the connection and compassion that can only come from another human. To see someone through the messiness of mortality with love, patience and dignity—that is something no machine or technology is capable of doing. That kind of work is a gift. This film is a love letter to my own grandmother, who passed away at the age of 99, and I was fortunate to be a caregiver for her during the last few years of her life. The relationship between Cathy and Nai Nai is modeled loosely on the hilarious and exasperating experiences we had together. I wrote this film because I wanted to show the real, vulnerable and ugly parts of care—the embarrassing moments in the bathroom, the sleepless nights, and all the joy and resentment that come with the job.

She’s a regular at festivals and clubs around the country and has opened for comics like Taylor Tomlinson, Ronny Chieng, and Patton Oswalt. You may recognize Irene from After Midnight, Hulu, Comedy Central, Netflix Is A Joke, Don’t Tell Comedy, or her viral stand-up clips, which have amassed over 30 million views on social media.

THE STORY
I AM NOBODY follows Xin Ying across a transformative journey beginning on her 40th birthday in 2025 as she continues her role as a principal dancer, mother, activist, and innovator. Having survived a devastating earthquake in China right before immigrating to New York to study Martha Graham's dance technique, Xin Ying rose to become one of the company’s leading artists while navigating divorce, a newfound love, motherhood, and reconciliation with her family.Over the course of two years, the film documents her evolving path: touring internationally, earning a master’s degree, exploring dance technology and AI-based archival work, founding new dance initiatives in China, while holding space for her dream of one day stepping into artistic leadership at the Martha Graham Dance Company. The film is an intimate portrait of motion and becoming, capturing an artist who refuses to be defined by a single role as she reimagines her future in real time.
